dawa is a an art, dealing with heartsWhen inviting others to Islam, it is important that we don’t scare others away. By telling the hard-core truth, at every start. The dai most talk such sentences he/she thinks will touch hearts. By slowly make people think and evaluate their life, where they are heading, and where they can be. Same people are motivated by positive talk/scary talk/inspirational talk, but at different times in their life. If we tell an already depressed person, you’re going to hell (scary talk), he/she will be more scared, probably too depressed to change. Hence he/she needs to be inspired with motivational positive talk.

Give Insight In Their Situation

An arrogant, wicked evil person, might carry on his works if we don’t scare him/her of the punishments. So maybe a tad more talks about how big Allah is (rehman/jabbar). Even the Quran speaks about everything in saying if you do this you will go to hell. The sentence after is positive, but if you do this you’ll go to paradise. Or vice versa. Allah’s speaking like this is of His Wisdom. Maybe to scare people from doing wrong without them loosing hope in Allah’s forgiveness. If they do good, no matter what happens in dunya, they will attain a good hereafter. If they do evil in dunya, no matter the outcome here, there hereafter will be full of punishments.

They Might Persist In Their Wrongdoing

Prophet Muhammad pbuh always changed his dawa style according to the one he was addressing. We are different, and get scared or inspired/motivated differently. Once there was a man at the door of the Prophet pbuh. His wife Aisha raa came to tell him pbuh who it was. He pbuh said, this is an evil person. When he came inside and they talked together he pbuh was nicer than he usually is with other people. After the man went, his wife Aisha raa was curious of why he pbuh was so nice to him, when he was so evil. He pbuh said because if he would be harsher, that person because of his evilness, could harm his pbuh, by telling evil stories to others, and helping them get spread easily. So to protect himself pbuh had to be nicer. We also know by another hadith that we can`t be to harsh with evil people. Or else they will just persist in their wrongdoings. Do you remember the hadith about the man who killed 99 people. He killed the monk that told him he had no chance for forgiveness. In Islam there is always a way back, because of Allah’s vast forgiveness.

Understand The Audience

When a dai says yes to speak in a gathering in different countries, he/she has to find out something about the audience to know what to say or how to say something, or what needs to be thoroughly explained, what are their issues/problems, what are their good qualities. This is psychology. A dai can`t give examples of entrepeneurs in a gathering of doctors. They won`t relate to it. And the vice versa. To touch hearts we have to talk about something that catches their attention and will keep them listening and focused at the same time touch their heart to help them change for the better. It is not easy. But most dais are doing an excellent job. Ma sha Allah. May Allah give them aafia and barakah in their lives and success in their work for Allah. Aameen. For us to give the same dawa to everyone, everyone had to be the same. We know that we are all different. So we have to adjust the sail according to where we want to go.

True happiness is being obedient and submissive to Allah, white flowerThe people we interact with influence us according to their values. Even if they aren`t our closest friends, their values can rub off on us. Some people say we become like the 5 people we spend the most time with. Be it at home, work, university etc. We can`t choose the people who are in our family, but we can choose whom we will befriend. Even if we have to work or study with people who are very different from us, we don`t have to let their differences affect our values. To be able to do that we have to have control over ourself with understanding and believing in our goals and be determined that we are going to make it, no matter how difficult the road might seem. Guidance comes from Allah. He is the only One whom guides us. We should always supplicate to him to ask for the straight path of guidance with a heart that accept guidance as well. Without His Help we are indeed lost. As long as we rely only on Him we can`t be lost. When we start to rely on ourself and our abilities, He will send us a difficulty to teach us who is in charge. If we have any ability to do anything it is merely because of His Love. He can take away whatever He has blessed us with. So it remains to practice patience and gratefulness side by side, and turn to Him always, every day, as often as possible.

It Is Better To Die Than To Be Disobedient To Allah

Who hasn`t had some friends with different set of values that has influenced them without thinking of the consequences of it being harmful for ourself. When we are practising muslims, doing the right thing might be hard, but it will be the only way. Your choice will be between: 1. Doing the right and 2. Doing the right thing. Even and despite the road being packed with difficulties. When we are so strict with ourself, we won`t allow ourself to fall into sin, and if and when we do, and yes it is inevitable, we would feel that dying is better than being disobedient to Allah. His true slaves turn to Him whenever they fail.

Leave The Place

To be able to control our desires and our emotions we need to be in control of our heart. When we keep on doing sins, it`s sickness is increased. It can only be healed by listening to Quran and doing good deeds, keeping wudhu, avoiding bad company, and avoiding sin. When our heart has come a bit on the way to becoming healthy, it won`t even like the places that leads to sin. If we ourself are struggling it is difficult for us to help others. When we are strong, we can face the fitna/tribulations that would be in such a place. We can`t save others before we save ourself.

Allah, Jannah, Muslim, proveA bad Friend Is Worse Than Shaytan

We need to be aware of our worth. When we know something is bad for us, we can`t be persistent in it. For example, a friend of yours ask you to jump off a mountain. Every sane person knows that you`ll die or break a lot of bones in your body, from the fall. Never mind that, he`s my best friend, how can I not do what he said, he knows me so well, and what would help me, right? The same goes for sinning. We need to stand up for Islam and be able to say “no”, and not follow a bad advice that will harm our Hereafter. Even if our so-called friends is cheering us to do it. We know that it`s not right, so we abstain. There is a saying in urdu that when one in a group of people is wrong, all the others will guide him to become good but what will the people do when most of the people in the group are wrong and only one is right. Avoid. It is like a group of young boys that just got their driving license. They are not perfect drivers but has got permission to drive. That means they need to be extra careful to not break any rules. The rules are new to them and they need to be familiar with them to know how to drive correctly.  If one of them cheers the driver to overspeed, they have only themselves to blame if they they come in an accident. Even those that doesn`t practice Islam knows that when we sin, we are going in the direction of Hell-fire, if we don`t repent and make amends. If we still wan`t do be persistent in going on that way, when we know the consequences, we are indeed stupid. That is why I believe in the saying of some elders that a bad friend is worse than shaytan, because shaytan only whispers to you, but that friend, he takes you to that place of sinning and doesn`t stop until you have sinned, so that you become like him. And then he can say, “Way to go, yeah I can see, you are a muslim”. The only goal of a bad friend is to make you just as bad as him.

In Good And Bad Always Turn To Allah

Bottom line. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid. The more a person want to sin, the more Allah loves him, when he is able to abstain from it. Don`t rely on yourself or others. Rely only on Allah. People are sometimes good to you and sometimes bad, mostly according to what you benefit them with. Don`t lose your focus. Keep yourself determined to go to Paradise. And be aware that the way to Paradise is a road that is packed with difficulties. Though as long as we are persistent, we can find blessings in the difficulties. Whatever good or bad happens, always turn to Allah. Allah is in charge, He is the one Who has made the rules and regulations. He decides how matters are and how we can respond, out of His Wisdom. We don`t know as much as a grain according to Allah Who knows All that is in the Universe. How can we for one minute think that we know better than Him. It is plain impossible. When he asks us to abstain from something, even if we in our minds are not able to understand the wisdom, we have to trust in Him. He made us and know what is good for us. Only the maker of a vehicle, knows what is good and bad for it. Similarly, it is by Allah`s command that we are here in this world, so we must rely on the fact that he knows best what He wants for us. Accordingly He knows best how to handle our heart, and how to keep it away from all kinds of diseases. People wonder why some believers are in tension most of the time. How can they relax before they enter Paradise? The day they enter Paradise, with those they love, they will be content and rejoice over the fact that they made it to their goal. Sinning takes them further away from their goal, and being obedient makes them closer to their goal. May Allah preserve us, guide us and give us a heart that accept guidance, give us righteous company, and give us strong imaan and will to do what is right according to Islam and make it easy for us to follow Him. Aameen summa aameen.

never give up, chessWe are all priceless people and our individuality must be nourished. Instead of trying to fit in, we should help and encourage children to dare to stand out in a crowd, from a young age. Dare to go against the crowd. Just because some norms have become ordinary doesn`t mean we can`t evaluate, adjust and make better norms. The society and we are gradually changing whether we want it or not. Even if we resist change, it won`t stop the earth from spinning in its course or the sun or the moon from shining. Maturity is to accept change. Not only accept it but be an active part in inspiring/motivating a change for the better. An hadith quoted by Prophet Muhammad pbuh said: That time Islam came it was introduced as something strange, because it differed from the society at that time. He pbuh goes on saying that it will return to something strange, so glad tidings to the strangers. Just because it has become a norm that it isn`t “normal” to i.e. pray regularly / not backbite / wear hijab etc, doesn`t mean we can`t go back to the Sunnah of our Prophet pbuh, renew our intentions and make a norm that we are going to try to achieve this and make it a norm in our life. Our Prophet pbuh has said that anyone who reminds people about forgotten Sunnah and is capable of motivating them to follow it will have the reward of all those who start following it, without it detracting the least from their reward. (Tirmidhi). Subhan Allah what an immense opportunity. Eventually it can become an ongoing charity that only increases and pass on for generations to come. We just need to start somewhere.

Everyone has to start from where they are.

Some knows much but follows little, other knows little but follows new things they learn. In the beginning when Allah guides us to Islam, either we are born muslim or convert to it, we start by focusing on the outward appearance. Proper salah, beard, hijab, pay zakat etc. When our zaahir / outwardly looks like a muslim, we can focus on the inwardly things that are invisible, baatin, like character, taqwa, intention etc. Just because a brother has beard or a sister has hijab doesn`t tell us whether they are mu`min one that does what is required in Islam and stays away from what`s prohibited and the extra voluntary Ibaadah as well or on the other side one that is just a muslim and believes in Islam but doesn`t follow all the rules. But to come anywhere near becoming a mu`min we need to start being a muslim. You know at the time of the Prophet pbuh and tabièn, people put more effort in improving their baatin, and had a not so good zaahir. They were the best of muslims. Nowadays people may have a beautiful zaahir but rather bad baatin because of bad character. Jealousy, envy, hatred, having bad thoughts about other, backbiting, spreading malicious gossip has become the norm rather than the exception. A good deed will still be a good deed, even if no one does it, a bad deed will still be a bad deed, even if everyone does  it. Instead of supporting eachother in doing bad deeds, we should rather try to motivate eachother to do good deeds. What is within our capacity.

Friends for eternity

It is important that we look at others who are better than us in deen, to motivate us also to improve ourselves. Our friends has an impact on our personality. If we always hang around with righteous people, their thoughts and behaviour will rub off on us too. If we always spend time with people who are worse than us in deen, we might learn things that will misguide us further away from Islam. Allah is the only One Who guides. If one person in a circle of friends becomes better, he/she should also try to change his/her surrounding. If that is not possible than at least don`t let his environment change him/her and try to seek more righteous company.

own faults
Make others feel hopeful rather than hopeless

Iman rises with doing good deeds and decreases by sinning. Because the nature of humans is that they sometime or other will fall into sin, it is important that we turn back to Allah and repent as soon as this happens. Make it a habit to not let our sin make us feel hopeless. We need to be feeling hopeful of Allah`s forgiveness. He forgives everything as long as we have pure intentions and make amends. We should also have a responsibility on others that we always make other feel hopeful of Allah`s Mercy. Or else we will be made answerable for coming in the way of someone whom wanted to turn back to Allah, but because of our negativity, strayed. Hate the sin, but not the sinner, as everyone can and will sin. An awesome quote says: just because someone sins different from us, shouldn`t make us feel better than them. Allah loves the humble sinner more than those people whom becomes proud after he/she has done a good deed. We must know that anything good we have done, it is because Allah guided us. He is the only one whom guides. So he wants us to do it. It should make us feel thankful/grateful, that he chose us to be amongst those people whom does some good deeds, be it prayer, charity or someone whom helps other or anything that leads to good. Allah inspires good things to us. It is not because of ourselves.

People find faults even where there are few

We should not be scared of showing the world that we are muslims, by having beard/ hijab etc or performing salah. Though it is also important that if we have started with something good, let it become a norm before we share it with others. The evil eye is for real. There are some people whom no matter what good things you do, they`ll always pinpoint the mistakes, rather than appreciating the good you do. Don`t mind others. We will get back from Allah. People criticize, judge, find faults even if there aren`t many. Allah hides flaws, forgives, helps through difficult times, regardless of amount of sins. As long as we purify our intentions once in a while, we will always turn back to Him to put our trust where it belongs. He is sufficient for us. When our intention is to please Allah, we won`t mind what people say. Some times they are on your side, other times they are against you. People change quicker than the weather. If we rely on Allah alone, we will not be disappointed. There is no better support in the universe than Him. We dare to stand out in a gathering, only when we know we are on the right path. May Allah guide and keep us on the right path always. Ameen summa ameen.

Humility versus arroganceWe are nothing without Allah. He is the One that has made us and given us life. If it wouldn`t have been His will we wouldn`t have been in this world. He is the one that gives us everything in this universe. Even if we would try to thank Him, the thankfulness would not be as great as what He is Worthy of. We do good deeds because He has ordered us to do them, and that is a good thing. Though shaitan try to put vasvasa in our heads. If we are sinners, shaitan stops us from repenting, if we repent and become good people and do good deeds, shaitan puts vasvasa in our mind that, if we don`t recognize the trap, we become arrogant.

In order to protect ourself from shaitan we must understand these traps and fight them with all we have got. It is not because there is any good in us that we are doing anything good, it is because Allah has guided us to do it. If it wouldn`t have been for His Mercy and Guidance, we would have been lost.

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) has said: If we have an atom of arrogance in our hearts we would not be allowed to go to jannah /Paradise. So people asked that one likes that her/his dress is beautiful and her/his shoes are beautiful. So the Prophet (pbuh) said: “Verily Allah is the Most Beautiful, and He loves beauty. Pride is to completely disregard the truth, and to scorn (look down on) the people. (Sahih, Muslim).

How do we ignore the truth? When we know that it is like this or that and don`t follow it, that is arrogance. Like mostly people know that in Islam it is made obligatory to pray the 5 prayers. Though there are less than half of the muslim or even fewer that actually pray the 5 prayers. We would say this about all the other regulations in Islam as well. Most of us have become part-time-muslims. That is not always because of ignorance. So if we believe, that we are muslims, we need to become Allah`s slave, because that is the true meaning of Islam to submit to His Laws.

Another thing written in this hadith is don`t look down on other people. Subhan Allah that is so common these days. If people themselves are doing good deeds, they would often look down on other people who are maybe sinning. Though they do not know the state of the heart of that person like Allah does, though they become a judge like Him and think they know everything. I read a quote one time that said, don`t look down at others just because they sin different from you. Allah could forgive them for sinning, but maybe not forgive you for your arrogance.

Also we do not know the state we will die in. The Prophet (pbuh) has said, that there will come a time when a person that is a good muslim, will become evil and die in that state, and that a person that was evil, will become good and die and that state. So we are not able to judge anyone at all. Me must always pray and ask Allah that we die as muslims, but for that to happen, we must also live as muslims.

What makes us arrogant is when we think that we have accomplished is because we deserve it or that we have worked hard for it. Though we might have worked some for it, but it is because of Allah’s Rahma over us that we have been gifted in any way. Not because of our deeds or our conduct. Allah test us by giving us gifts and by taking away gifts. We need to show thankfulness/gratefulness when we are blessed and patience when we are tested. Only then we will prosper. Allah may have given us a gift, but He can also take it away, if we don`t show appreciaton for it to Him.

We need to ask Allah to guide us all the time and always keep us humble. A supplication one can make is : “Laa Ilaaha Illallah, Subhanall-Ghaniyall-Moa3jzi”. It`s interpretation is “There is not God but Allah, He is Perfect, and the one who makes us humble”. (See picture for arabic spelling).

The Prophet (pbuh) has said: no one humbles himself for Allah but Allah raises him. (Sahih, Tirmidhi). What do you think will be the outcome of the one Allah raises. Subhan Allah 🙂 May Allah have mercy on us and guide us and keep us steadfast on His religion and make us His pious slaves. Ameen summa ameen.

My Prayer..

“O Allah, place light in my heart, and on my tongue light, and in my ears light and in my sight light, and above me light, and below me light, and to my right light, and to my left light, and before me light and behind me light. Place in my soul light. Magnify for me light, and amplify for me light. Make for me light and make me a light. O Allah, grant me light, and place light in my nerves, and in my body light and in my blood light and in my hair light and in my skin light.” Ameen
